NEW YORK -- Chevrolet is finally bestowing upon us a fully redesigned Malibu, and surprise, it's quite a looker! Malibu has been Chevy's entry-level full-sized sedan for some time now, but with each generation it gets better and better. This, the ninth gen, marks some significant steps forward.
Chief among them is a drastic savings of weight, some 300 pounds dropped over the current model. That's impressive considering the thing has a 3.6-inch longer wheelbase, delivering big increases in cabin space. The lighter weight helps fuel economy, too. The base car will feature an Ecotec 1.5-liter, 160-horsepower turbocharged engine, good for an estimated 37 mpg on the highway and 27 in the city. Those who need more power will be able to opt for a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor with 250 horsepower. That motor gets GM's new eight-speed auto, while the smaller motor makes do with a six-speed.
The bigger story is a new hybrid model, that is said to adopt technology from the Volt. That version is said to deliver an impressive 45 mpg combined and will offer 182 horsepower total across both 1.8-liter gas and electric motors. Like the Volt, the Malibu Hybrid can cruise at speeds up to 55 MPH using electricity only.
The new Malibu will offer safety features like adaptive cruise, lane-departure warnings, and a new Teen Driver mode that automatically monitors younger drivers and sends reports to their parents about top speeds attained and will even keep tally of things like the number of times lane-departure warnings were triggered. Great for parents; perhaps not something the kids will look forward to. That's provided by the connectivity systems within the car, which include all the latest OnStar goodies, including an integrated, LTE-powered hotspot.
Chevrolet will have the 2016 Malibu in US dealerships sometime before the end of this year. No word on pricing in any market just yet, but don't expect it to stray too far from the current car's $22,465.
