2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Preview - CNET

Last year Mercedes-Benz announced it would restructure its model names in an effort to make more sense out of its letter designations. One affected model, the medium-size SUV GLK, would become the GLC. Now, Mercedes-Benz shows off the GLC with not just a new name, but a complete redesign and inclusion of the company's latest technologies.

The new GLC, coming out as a 2016 model, takes a completely different styling direction, losing the boxy look of the GLK in favor of a raked roofline at the rear hatch. The rear design in particular looks similar to that found on Audi and Infiniti SUVs. The front, however, retains some brawn, the grille sporting a twin blade rather than the single blade of Mercedes-Benz's more sport-oriented models.

LED headlights will be available on the GLC, and include automatic high beams, which seamlessly transition their throw patterns depending on ambient light and traffic.

Radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors on the new GLC300 continually watch for impending collisions front and rear. Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz has built on its Distronic adaptive cruise control in recent years, offering cars that nearly drive themselves with lane-keeping technologies. The new GLC benefits from this work, letting buyers opt for a complete sensor package including cameras and radar that can warn of impending collisions to the front or rear. The car can control its speed and braking, and even manipulate steering to help prevent collisions.

Comfort has been a strong area for Mercedes-Benz as well, and it looks like the GLC will do well here. It can be optioned with an air suspension that will make its ride smoother and deliver better handling. In Mercedes-Benz's larger cars, its air suspension technology works wonders. The question is whether it can be successfully scaled down for a smaller model.

Today's announcement covered two versions for the US market, the GLC300 and GLC300 4Matic, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive respectively. The all-wheel-drive system splits torque 45/55 front to rear.

Both versions come with a 2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine making 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, a bit more than the similarly sized engine in the GLA250. That engine comes mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Expect diesel options at launch in other markets, and a later diesel introduction for the US.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 and GLC300 4Matic will be available in showrooms later this year.
